Best friend and contributor Coach Dean posted the photo (above) to his Facebook page and the conversation got started about RACISM here in America. There is always “TALK” about racism does it exist, or mainstream media interviewing the same people about “Race In America”: Sharpton, Jackson, Smiley, and the list goes on, or one that I love the most, White folks who say that it does not exist and that we need to move on.
There are two problems here: 1) Racism does still exist and 2) There has been TALK about racism BUT there have not been discussions on racism with folks from ALL different types of life. Sharing their experiences, or why it is they believe the way they do. In order to truly move forward, one must listen, understand, agree, or disagree. This is what I want to accomplish with this ONGOING blog, article, or whatever you call it. A healthy discussion; here you can share your thoughts in a intelligent conversation. NOT EVERYONE WILL AGREE but with good discussions and taking a minute to step into a another’s persons shoes even if it does not fit with your belief or thought process, the point here is to give everyday people a chance to be heard. A chance to balance some things better in your lives when it comes to the people you work with, live next door to, or someone in your family chooses to date or be friends with, racism exist.
Before we move forward with conversation, let’s first look at the definition of RACISM. According to Dictionary.com, RACISM is defined as the following: 1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others. 2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination. 3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.
Now, there will be African-Americans who will say that ‘We can’t be racist or demonstrate any form of racism and that is not true because by looking at the #3, it clearly shows that we can show this type of behavior to others.
Media has trained us to have hate for one another just in the choice of words that will trigger the type of racist reaction in all of us for example: Terrorist= Muslim, immigrants’= Mexicans, Russians= Spies, Black= has always been associated with being bad. There is more to add to the list but this just gives you an idea how, let be clear, mainstream media operates. There is money to be made in having negative news, issues, and groups focusing on racism. So once you put these types of ideas and thoughts in people’s heads you begin to foster or harbor an idea about another group, then that leads to hate. So ask yourself, how can a media outlet really discuss racism if they are ones that foster it?
Let’s discuss education; I firmly believe that every culture should embrace who they are and teach their children where they come from. This is where the education TRULY starts. That child as he or she grows is able to explain who and what they are to their new friends or associates that they hang with. We as parents, uncles, brothers, sisters, mothers, aunts, sons, and daughters, depend too much on a school system that is teaching a history, social studies, or education that is based on ideas that THEY want you believe. For example, did Christopher Columbus really discovery America? Was President Obama the FIRST African-American President? What about the TRUTH about women holding the country down during World War II? That is why Education is vital to understanding our neighbors. Not just from a book standpoint but educating ourselves through experience. Have you ever attended a Italian Festival? Latino Event? How about Russian or Polish Event? Black History Event? Education and Discussion, in my opinion hold the key to combating racism.
Go back to the map of the United States (above) then look at the election. Is it any coincidence in 2012 these states still align with the same ideology? Is there a reason why one political party, from the swearing of the President of 2008, had and publically denounced and unwilling to work with him? Is it a coincidence that the states in the South want to break off from the rest of the United States because women are now moving up in politics, Whites are outnumbered? That Latinos have a voice in the country? Racism is a tool to divide and conquer. The less you know and disagree with each other; THEY stay in power and in control. To be clear, of who they are, THEY are those WHITE men who want the country to be the way it used to be. THEY control the education and media and the only way we can break that is by having REAL LIFE discussions on Racisms because it does exist; Sexism, because it does exist; The division of North & South because it does exist; and the only way it can be accomplished is on the grassroots level. By having honest discussions on topics like Racism and sharing these stories now matter how hurtful and unbelievable they are but in order to move forward, we have to discuss.
So please share your thoughts, your experiences, but let us do it in an intelligent manner. The only posts I will delete are those that are ignorant in nature. If you disagree, they will not be deleted because we need to have everyone share. That is a TRUE discussion. Also post will be deleted that veer of topic. If you have ideas for other conversation pieces, please email: email@example.com . So please share and discuss.
